BUYING A DVD PLAYER There are many different types of DVD players available. These days you can find DVD players as portable DVD players (some especially configured to work in cars, boats and caravans), combination DVD with VHS players and game consoles (such as Xbox and Playstation II) that double as DVD players. We can roughly divide the differences into compatibility, video and audio differences. Compatibility In terms of compatibility, there are a number of issues. Firstly there is the region encoding issue. Some players are restricted to playing only DVDs from one Zone or Region (Australia is Zone 4, USA is Zone 1, etc) whilst other players are able to play DVDs from all regions. Some DVD players will play a number of other formats as well as DVD. These include SVCD, VCD, CDR, CDRW, HDCD and Kodak Picture CD. DVD Players with dual lasers tend to have better pickup. On top of this, some DVD players (mostly older ones) do not support certain recordable DVD formats. Video The video output on a DVD player is normally component, S-Video or Composite. If your television has a component input, then this will provide the highest quality video image. Some players support progressive frame display and this will provide higher quality images as well in certain circumstances. Audio There are a number of options available as far as audio. Do you want one that support digital surround sound. High end models will support 192 kHz/24-bit audio decoding, Do you want headphone or karaoke support, coaxial or optical output? The latest decision to make is DVD or Blu-ray DVD. Initially there were 2 competing hi definition formats: Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Blu-ray with a much greater capacity than HD-DVD became victorious in 2008 when HD-DVD pulled out of the competition. Always check that the player is backwardly compatible with DVDs so that you can play your current DVDs. Some Blu-ray players will be backwardly compatible with CDs as well. |
