In 1995, Sony released miniDV (DV), the first digital recording format available to consumers. Nearly loss-less broadcast quality picture. The ¼" format provides 500+ lines of resolution. The tape is 66 x 48 x 12.2mm. miniDV uses DV or DVC format, essentially the same format used by professional formats such as DVCam and DVCPro. However, it records on a much smaller tape.
