Domestic and older film types were usually shot at 18, 16 or even lower fps (frame per second). Modern Video is 25fps (PAL).

We scan each individual frame so the original capture is known as Frame to Frame which refers to a digital output that only contains the original frames. This digital video output maintains the purest quality, as it has no interlacing, frame interpolation or frame blending.

Frame to frame gives maximum flexibility in editing BUT your software must have the facility to show the film down to its original speed before you finalise it (video runs at 25 fps but the original film was shot at 18fps so people will be moving quckly in the file).

In order to correct the playback motion speed, extra frames have to be added to adjust the playback to 25fps for PAL or 29.97fps for NTSC. We utilise professional interpolation software to produce the additional frames required, ensuring the smoothest normal speed motion possible. This output is known as Slowed to Normal Speed and is ideal fot those customers who wants editable files but without the extra step of slowing the film themselves.

If you are playing back interlaced video clips on a PC or Mac, then you have probably seen the ‘jaggies’ effect where fast moving edges take on a comb effect. This is due to the two fields of the video capturing the motion at slightly different times. This is absolutely normal. When playing the same interlaced video through a TV monitor, this effect disappears and plays perfectly.

Mould on Video tapes is a very common occurrence these days. In the majority of cases a good transfer quality is achieved. However, where heavy mould penetration and physical damage has occurred, static and fuzzy pictures will result. Also tapes tend to become sticky and are prone to shedding. In very bad cases we will need to bake or repair the tapes to enable transfer and additonal costs will apply.

This is very common request. If a copy is needed to send overseas with a different system, we can produce PAL and NTSC versions at the same time.

PCs will normally accept Hard Drives formatted as NTFS, a file system compatible with the Microsoft Windows platform, whilst Macs accepts Hard Drives formatted as HFS, HFS+, etc, a file format compatible with a Mac platform.

By installing specific software, a PC can read and write Mac Drives, and similarly, a Mac can access NTFS drives. Whilst FAT32 is common to both platforms, file size is restricted to 4GB. Another format common to both platforms without the 4GB limitation is exFAT, however, it is not recognised by older OS such as Windows XP unless the required drivers are downloaded from Microsoft.

A USB Drive with less than 32GB capacity is usually formatted as FAT32 by the manufacturer, but you cannot make a file larger than 4GB. For larger size USB Drives, exFAT is formatted by default. We can format any size of USB to exFAT which will work on PC or Mac and has no file size limitation. However, exFAT is not recognised by older OS such as Windows XP unless you load the driver from Microsoft. Of course, a USB can be formatted as NTFS for Windows, or HFS+ for Mac, however this will cause compatibility issue across the different platforms. (see answer for above question)

Older analog video signals are always interlaced, and it is best practice to keep it this way when transferring to digital file in order to maintain the original picture quality. Forcing an interlaced video to a progressive scan is not recommended as the picture quality will be degraded noticeably.

If the DVD is produced in 16:9 ratio, but your TV is set to 4:3 ratio, the picture will get squashed and vice versa. You must set your DVD player to the same aspect ratio as the TV you are connecting to. Check the settings on your devices.

Yes, many of our customers have a tape stuck inside their old camcorder due to missing power adaptors. We hold a wide variety of power adaptors that can power up the machine and eject the tape. If it still does not eject, we will ask the customer permission to perform a manual opening procedure. Whilst this procedure will not damage the tape inside, depending on the model and make, damaging the camcorder may occur.

A miniDVD must be finalised by your miniDVD camcorder in order to watch it in a normal DVD player or be accessed by computer. Where miniDVDs are not finalised, and the camcorder is broken or cannot be found, we can usually extract the footage with using specialized software through success is limited. Additional charges may apply in this case.

In most cases, yes. The tape needs to be properly dried out before we can attempt the transfer to avoid damaging our equipment. This process requires our tape baking procedures where additional charges will apply. Get them to us as soon as possible.

You have a software issue with your laptop. You will need the correct DVD software installed on your laptop, this software should have full functionality like a DVD player as it contains the correct codec to play any DVD disc. Install software that can read DVD Video.

There are a few reasons this may be occurring:
1) Your DVD may be too old and not compatible with the modern DVD-R.
2) The pick-up lens inside your DVD player may need servicing or cleaning.
3) Although, we use the best quality of DVD media to produce our DVDs, some particular models and makes of player may not read it properly and hence cause skipping. We are committed to customer satisfaction and will replace your DVD using another brand of media until your player can read it properly. Of course this is free of charge.

Please note DVD players are primarily designed to play DVD Video discs. They may not have the software to decode other types of files on a DVD disc, e.g. MPEG4 files.

Standard definition or lower quality footage from your old analog tapes will have no major resolution gains by being placed on a Blu-ray rather than a DVD. Blu-ray is designed for high definition video. The advantage of a Blu-ray disc for non HD footage is that it can hold more footage (up to 3 times the quantity) but it does attract additional cost.

It is not technically possible to print a good quality image from an 8mm frame. The reasons are as follows: Print quality is defined at 300dpi. A Super 8mm frame has approximately 5mm x 4mm of image data. At standard definition this represents 720 x 576 pixels or an image size of 60mm x 48mm. Even scanned at 4000dpi (the effective limitation of the grain of the film), the image size is limited to 780 x 630 pixels for fine grain Super 8 films, less for Standard 8 and coarse grain Super 8 films, slightly above SDTV specifications. This equates to 66 x 53mm at accepted printed quality of 300dpi. On top of this very low print resolution, the cinefilm is used to capture movement and the frame rate is very slow which appears as a blurry item in the frame when held still. Some will argue that the image can be upscaled using software. However, if the image detail is not there to start with, it cannot be generated from thin air.

This depends on where you are sending it from. If you are in Australia, the best option is via registered post. Never send important irreplaceable items by a method that does not have signature on receipt and tracking.
